The work was premiered by Lindsey Jacob in 2008.
The material for Reflection was generated algorithmically using Common Music, a Lisp and Scheme-based environment for computer-aided composition. Weighted possibilities of available pitches on the saxophone and sets of predetermined rhythmic material were the basis of the computer-generated material. The piece alternates improvisatory sections with computer-generated sections. The improvisations should be reflections and interpretations (stylistically and motivically) of the corresponding computer-generated sections. Unlike many improvisatory traditions, some of the improvised sections occur before its corresponding generated section.
