The work was premiered April 28, 2011 by the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music Chamber Players, Simon Tillier, conductor. The ensemble was directed by Rodney Winther.
It is an interesting feeling to be continually moving without a target destination, such as floating on a raft in a pool. It is just as peaceful yet exhilarating to imagine oneself suspended in air. This work explores the sensation of floating through sound. Certain elements, such as timbre and dynamics are continually shifting through time, like a buoy on water. Other elements such as melody, give perspective to the location of a sound, whether floating above the texture or becoming enveloped into the ensemble sound.
The score calls for flute/piccolo, clarinet in B-flat, horn in F, trombone, percussion, violin, viola, cello, and double bass.
