Choice

for six musicians (short: 5', long: 9')

People have the opportunity to communicate with one another everyday in a variety of circumstances. Whether a friendly nod and grin while passing a stranger on the street or a heated conversation between two friends, communication is a vital part of living. Although necessary, many choose to avoid communicating with others in their present environment. In this piece, performers create musical gestures that are altered and transformed throughout the work. The choice of communicating within the ensemble, primarily through listening and gestural emulation, is given to each individual performer. Thus, choices made by the performing musicians affect the outcome of the work. Written in 2009.
